Synopsis
Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 historical drama anime film written and directed by Isao Takahata at Studio Ghibli. It runs for about 89 minutes and is based on a short story by Akiyuki Nosaka, who wrote it from his own life. It is set in and around the city of Kobe, Japan, in 1945, near the end of the Second World War. It is a very sad film about the cost of war.
Seita is a 14 year old boy, and Setsuko is his little sister, who is four. Their father is away serving in the navy. They live with their mother in Kobe.
One day, American planes drop fire bombs on the city. Much of Kobe burns. Seita and Setsuko survive, but they lose their home, and their mother is badly hurt in the attack. Seita tries to protect Setsuko from the truth for as long as he can.
With nowhere else to go, the children move in with their aunt in a nearby town. At first, she lets them stay. But food is very scarce because of the war, and the aunt becomes cold and unkind to them. Seita decides that he and Setsuko will leave and live on their own.
The two of them move into an old bomb shelter near a pond. At night, they catch fireflies and let them light up the dark shelter. The film follows Seita and Setsuko as they try to survive together in a country that has little left to give.
