Synopsis
Mieruko-chan is a 2021 horror comedy anime with 12 episodes. It was made by the studio Passione and is based on the manga by Tomoki Izumi. It is set in modern Japan, in a normal town and high school. It has scary images and some fan service, so it is best for older teens and adults.
Miko Yotsuya is an ordinary high school girl. One day, without any warning, she starts to see ghosts. They are not cute spirits. They are huge and terrifying monsters that appear everywhere, on the bus, in her room and at school.
Miko does not know how to fight them or make them go away. So she makes a simple choice. She pretends she cannot see them at all. She keeps a calm face, looks straight ahead and acts normal, even when a monster is right in front of her. Inside, she is screaming.
Miko's best friend is Hana Yurikawa, a cheerful girl who loves to eat. Hana cannot see ghosts, but she seems to have a very strong life energy that draws them to her. Miko has to protect Hana without telling her the truth. Later, Miko also meets Yulia Niguredo, a girl who wants to be a psychic and thinks she has spiritual powers.
The show mixes real horror with jokes about Miko's poker face. It also has a few surprisingly warm stories about the ghosts and the people around them.
