Synopsis
Serial Experiments Lain is a 1998 psychological science fiction anime with 13 episodes. It is an original story made by Triangle Staff and written by Chiaki J. Konaka, with character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe. It is set in a quiet Japanese suburb in the late 1990s, at a time when computer networks are growing fast.
In the show, the internet is called the Wired. It is a huge network that connects people's computers, phones and more.
Lain Iwakura is a shy 14 year old girl. She does not talk much, and she is not interested in computers. At school, the students are shaken by the recent death of a classmate, a girl named Chisa Yomoda. Then some of the students, including Lain, start to get strange emails from Chisa. In the messages, Chisa says she is not really gone. She says she has only left her body behind, and that she now lives in the Wired.
Lain is curious. She asks her father for a better computer, called a Navi, and begins to explore the Wired. The more time she spends online, the more strange things happen around her. People she does not know say they have seen her in places she has never been.
The series follows Lain as she goes deeper into the Wired and the line between the real world and the online world begins to blur. The show has a slow, dreamlike style and deals with heavy themes.
