Synopsis
Perfect Blue is a 1998 psychological thriller anime film directed by Satoshi Kon and made by the studio Madhouse. It runs for about 81 minutes and is based on a novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi. It is set in Tokyo in the late 1990s. It is made for adult viewers and has disturbing scenes, violence and sexual content.

Mima Kirigoe is a young singer in a pop idol group called CHAM! The group has loyal fans, but it is not very famous. Mima's agency decides that she should leave the group and become an actress instead. Mima is not sure, but she agrees.

Many of her fans are upset about her choice. One of them is a strange man who follows her everywhere. Mima also finds a website called Mima's Room. It looks like an online diary written by her. It describes her daily life in great detail, even things only she would know. But Mima did not write it.

Mima gets a small role in a crime TV drama called Double Bind. To grow her career, she has to film hard and uncomfortable scenes that do not fit her old idol image. Her manager Rumi, who once was an idol herself, is worried about her.

As the pressure grows, Mima starts to see a version of her old idol self who blames her for changing. Strange and violent things begin to happen around her, and she cannot always tell what is real. The film follows Mima as she tries to hold on to her own identity.
