Synopsis
MUSHI-SHI is a 2005 fantasy anime with 26 episodes. It was made by the studio Artland and is based on the manga by Yuki Urushibara. It is set in a quiet, rural Japan from long ago, with small villages, mountains and forests. The show is calm and slow, with a soft, sometimes sad mood.
In this world, there are simple forms of life called mushi. They are not animals, plants or germs. They are closer to the basic stuff of life itself. Most people cannot see them, but mushi can still affect humans in strange ways. They can cause odd illnesses, change the weather or bring about events that seem like magic.
Ginko is a mushi-shi, a person who studies mushi and helps people who have problems with them. He has white hair and one green eye, and he is almost always smoking. He cannot stay in one place for long, because mushi are drawn to him. So he travels from village to village.
Each episode is its own short story. Ginko arrives in a new place, meets people whose lives have been touched by mushi and tries to understand what is going on. In the first episode, he meets a boy whose drawings come to life.
Ginko does not see mushi as good or evil. They are simply living things trying to survive. The show is about people, nature and the balance between them.
