Synopsis
Spice and Wolf is a 2008 fantasy romance anime with 13 episodes. It was made by the studio Imagin and is based on the light novel series by Isuna Hasekura. It is set in a world much like medieval Europe, with small farm towns, trading cities and a powerful Church. There is very little fighting. Most of the story is about trade, money and conversation.
Kraft Lawrence is a 25-year-old traveling merchant. He has spent seven years going from town to town with his horse and cart, buying and selling goods. His dream is to save enough money to open his own shop one day.
One night, while passing through the village of Pasloe during the harvest festival, Lawrence finds a young woman asleep in his cart. She has the ears and tail of a wolf. Her name is Holo, and she says she is the wolf god of the harvest. For centuries, she helped the village grow good wheat. But the people no longer believe in her, and she feels forgotten.
Holo wants to go back to Yoitsu, her home in the far north. She asks Lawrence to take her with him. Holo is proud and very clever, and she loves apples and good wine. She also has a sharp mind for business.
Soon, the two get caught up in a risky deal about silver coins. The show follows Lawrence and Holo as they travel, make deals and slowly grow close.
