Synopsis
The Tatami Galaxy is a 2010 comedy drama anime with 11 episodes. It was made by Madhouse and directed by Masaaki Yuasa. It is based on the novel by Tomihiko Morimi. It is set at a university in Kyoto, Japan. The show has a very fast style of talking and colorful, unusual art.
The main character is a third-year university student who is never named. He looks back on his time at university and feels he has wasted it. When he started, he dreamed of a perfect campus life. He wanted to join a great club, find true love with a quiet, dark-haired girl and make the most of his youth. Instead, nothing went the way he hoped.
A big reason for this is Ozu, a strange friend with a scary smile who loves to cause trouble. Ozu drags him into one silly plan after another. There is also Akashi, a calm and honest younger student who the main character secretly likes, but he never has the courage to act.
In each episode, the story goes back to the start of his first year. Each time, he makes a different choice and joins a different club, such as a film club or a tennis club. Each time, he hopes that this will be the path to a happy life. And each time, he meets Ozu again.
The show is a clever and funny story about regret, choices and learning to see the value in your own life.
