Synopsis
When They Cry is a 2006 horror mystery anime with 26 episodes. Its Japanese title is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It was made by Studio Deen and is based on the visual novel series by 07th Expansion. It has strong violence and disturbing scenes, so it is only for adult viewers.
The story is set in June 1983, in Hinamizawa, a small and quiet village in the mountains of Japan. Keiichi Maebara is a boy who has just moved there from the city with his family. He soon makes friends with four girls at the small village school. Rena is sweet and loves cute things. Mion is the bold leader of their after-school club. Satoko likes to set traps, and Rika is the calm young shrine maiden.
The club plays games together, and Keiichi enjoys his new life. But soon he hears about a dark part of the village's past. Each year, on the night of the Watanagashi festival, one person dies and another disappears. Some villagers say it is the curse of Oyashiro, the village god. His new friends do not want to talk about it.
The show is told in several arcs. Each arc starts over with the same characters and the same village, but the events change. The viewer must look for clues across the arcs to understand the truth behind Hinamizawa. The show starts as a light school story and slowly turns into horror.
