Synopsis
WONDER EGG PRIORITY is a 2021 psychological fantasy drama anime with 12 episodes and one special. It is an original story made by the studio CloverWorks and written by Shinji Nojima. It is set in modern Japan and in a strange dream world. The show deals with heavy themes, including trauma, bullying and suicide.
Ai Ohto is a 14 year old girl who has stopped going to school. She has eyes of two different colors, and other students used to tease her for it. Her only real friend, Koito, died not long ago. Ai does not understand why it happened, and she feels deep guilt about it.
One night, while walking alone, Ai finds a strange capsule machine. A voice tells her to buy an egg from it. When she falls asleep holding the egg, she enters a dream world. The egg breaks, and a girl comes out of it. Monsters appear and try to attack the girl, and Ai must protect her.
The mysterious voice makes Ai an offer. If she keeps buying eggs and protecting the girls inside them, she may be able to bring Koito back.
Soon, Ai meets three other girls who are doing the same thing. Neiru, Rika and Momoe have each lost someone close to them, and they also want that person back. The series follows the four girls as they fight in the dream world, become friends and slowly face the pain of their real lives.
