Berserk is a 1997 dark fantasy anime with 25 episodes. It was made by the studio OLM and is based on the manga by Kentaro Miura. It is set in a medieval European style world full of war, castles and mercenary armies. The show has strong violence and dark themes, so it is only for adult viewers.
The first episode shows Guts, a grim warrior known as the Black Swordsman. He carries a huge sword and has a metal left arm. He travels alone and fights terrible monsters. Then the story goes back in time to show how he became this way.
Years earlier, Guts is a young mercenary who sells his sword to anyone who will pay. He has been fighting in battles since he was a child. He trusts no one and cares only about surviving.
After one battle, Guts meets the Band of the Hawk, a famous group of mercenaries. Their leader is Griffith, a calm and beautiful young man with a big dream. He wants to rule his own kingdom one day. Griffith challenges Guts to a duel. When Guts loses, he is forced to join the Hawks.
At first, Guts does not fit in. Casca, the only woman fighter in the group, does not like him. But slowly, Guts becomes one of the Hawks' best soldiers. The series follows Guts, Griffith and Casca as the band rises through a long war, and it asks what it means to follow your own dream.
