Monster

Monster is a 2004 psychological thriller anime with 74 episodes. It was made by the studio Madhouse and is based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa. The story takes place mostly in Germany and other parts of Central Europe in the 1980s and 1990s.

Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a talented young Japanese brain surgeon who works at a big hospital in Dusseldorf, West Germany. He has a bright future, and he is engaged to the daughter of the hospital's director. But he is starting to feel uneasy about how the hospital puts rich and famous patients first.

One night in 1986, a young boy named Johan Liebert is brought in with a bullet wound to the head. His parents have been killed, and his twin sister is in shock. Tenma is about to operate on the boy when he is ordered to switch to the town's mayor, who has just arrived. Tenma refuses. He saves the boy, and the mayor dies.

Because of this choice, Tenma loses his place at the hospital, and his fiancee leaves him. Then, a short time later, the director and two senior doctors are found dead. The twins disappear from the hospital without a trace. The police suspect Tenma, but they cannot prove anything.

Nine years pass, and Tenma has become a respected chief surgeon. But the past comes back to him. The series follows Tenma on a long search across Europe, as he tries to face the results of the choice he made that night.
