Synopsis
Death Note is a 2006 anime series about a high school student who finds a notebook with the power to kill. It is a dark supernatural mystery made by the studio Madhouse, based on the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The series has 37 episodes and is set in present day Japan.
Light Yagami is a top student in Tokyo. He is very smart, but he is bored with his life and angry about crime in the world. One day he finds a black notebook on the ground at school. The rules inside say that if you write a person's name in it, that person will die. Light tests it, and it works.
The notebook belongs to Ryuk, a Shinigami, or god of death. Ryuk dropped it into the human world because he was bored too. He follows Light around, but he does not take sides. He only wants to watch.
Light decides to use the notebook to punish criminals. He wants to build a new world with no crime, and he wants to rule it. Soon, criminals all over the world start dying of heart attacks. The public calls the unknown killer "Kira".
The police ask for help from a famous detective known only as L. Nobody knows his face or his real name. Light's own father is a senior officer on the case. The show follows the battle of minds between Light and L, as each one tries to find the other first.
