Kaede Honjo is a high school girl who has never played video games. Her best friend, Risa Shiramine, invites her to try NewWorld Online and play together. Kaede creates a character named Maple. She chooses a big shield as her weapon.

When she builds her character, Kaede makes one simple choice. She does not want to feel pain, even in a game. So she puts every point she has into defense. Most players would call this a bad idea. Maple is very slow and cannot use normal magic.

But her plan works better than anyone expects. Monsters can barely hurt her at all. Because she plays in strange ways, she also unlocks rare skills that no one else has. Soon, she can do things like eat monsters and use powerful poison attacks. Other players start to notice this odd girl with a shield who cannot be beaten.

After her school exams are over, Risa joins the game as Sally, a fast player who dodges every attack. Together, they explore the game world, make new friends and take on big events. The show is a light and cheerful comedy about having fun in games.
