Synopsis
Sword Art Online is a 2012 science fiction action anime, and this first season has 25 episodes. It was made by A-1 Pictures and is based on the light novels by Reki Kawahara. The story starts in the year 2022.

A new virtual reality game called Sword Art Online is released. Players wear a headset called the NerveGear, which connects to their brain and lets them move inside the game world. The game takes place in Aincrad, a floating castle with 100 floors. Each floor has monsters, towns and a strong boss.

On launch day, 10,000 players log in. Soon they learn that they cannot log out. The game's creator appears and explains the new rules. If a player dies in the game, they also die in real life. If anyone on the outside tries to remove the headset, the player dies too. The only way out is to beat all 100 floors.

Kirito is a teenage boy who played the game during its test period. He knows more about the game than most people, so he chooses to play alone and grow stronger fast. A month later, many players have already died. Kirito joins a large group to fight the boss of the first floor, and there he meets a skilled fighter named Asuna.

The season follows Kirito as he fights to survive and to help the players reach the top of the castle.
