Synopsis
Fullmetal Alchemist is a 2003 fantasy adventure anime with 51 episodes. It was made by the studio Bones and is based on the manga by Hiromu Arakawa. The first half follows the early part of the manga, and the second half tells its own original story with a different ending. It is set in Amestris, a country that looks like early 20th century Europe.
In this world, alchemy is a real science. Alchemists can change one thing into another, but they must follow a basic law. To get something, they must give up something of equal value. Using alchemy to bring a dead person back to life is strictly forbidden.
Edward and Alphonse Elric are two brothers who grew up in a small country town. After their mother died, the young brothers tried to bring her back with alchemy. It went terribly wrong. Edward lost his left leg, and Alphonse lost his entire body. Edward then gave up his right arm to bind his brother's soul to a large suit of armor.
Now Edward has metal limbs, called automail. He has become a State Alchemist, an alchemist who works for the military, and people call him the Fullmetal Alchemist. He and Alphonse travel the country looking for the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary object that may be able to give them back their bodies.
The series follows the Elric brothers as they search for the Stone and start to learn that it hides a dark secret.
