Synopsis
Gate is a 2015 military fantasy anime, and this first part has 12 episodes. Its full title is Gate: Thus the Japanese Self-Defense Force Fought There. It was made by A-1 Pictures and is based on the light novel series by Takumi Yanai.
One summer day, a huge stone gate suddenly appears in the middle of Ginza, a busy area of Tokyo. An army from another world marches out of it. They have soldiers with swords, knights on horses and flying dragons. They attack the people in the streets.
Yoji Itami is a 33-year-old officer in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, or JSDF. He is also a big fan of anime and manga, and he was on his way to a fan event. When the attack starts, he helps many people escape to safety.
After Japan pushes the army back, the government decides to send the JSDF through the gate. On the other side is a fantasy land they call the Special Region. It is ruled by a strong Empire. Itami is put in charge of a small scouting team. Their job is to learn about the land and meet the people who live there.
On one mission, Itami's team finds an elf girl named Tuka after a fire dragon attacks her village. Soon they also meet Lelei, a young mage, and Rory, a girl who serves a god of death.
The show mixes battles, politics and comedy as modern soldiers meet a world of magic.
