Synopsis
Ponyo is a 2008 fantasy film made by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is an original story, loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid. It is set in a small fishing town by the sea in modern Japan. It is a gentle, colorful film for all ages, especially young children.
Sosuke is a five-year-old boy who lives in a house on a cliff above the sea. He lives with his mother, Lisa, who works at a care home for old people. His father, Koichi, is a ship captain who is often away at sea.
One day, Sosuke finds a small goldfish stuck in a glass jar on the beach. The fish has the face of a little girl. He saves her, keeps her in a bucket and names her Ponyo. Ponyo likes Sosuke very much, and she even learns to say his name. She also loves ham.
But Ponyo is not a normal fish. Her father, Fujimoto, is a wizard who lives deep under the sea. He does not trust humans, and he wants Ponyo to come home. He sends waves to take her back.
Ponyo does not want to be a fish anymore. She wants to be a human girl and stay with Sosuke. Her strong wish sets off powerful magic that starts to change the sea itself. The film is a warm story about friendship, family and the power of nature.
