Synopsis
Spirited Away is a 2001 fantasy anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli. It runs for about two hours and is an original story. Most of the film takes place in a magical world of spirits, hidden next to our own.
Chihiro Ogino is a ten year old girl who is moving to a new town with her parents. She is sulky and unhappy about the move. On the way, her father takes a wrong turn. The family finds an old tunnel in the woods, and on the other side they find what looks like an empty theme park.
Chihiro's parents find a food stall with no one there and start to eat. Chihiro does not want to join them, so she walks around on her own. As the sun sets, the town changes. Spirits start to appear, and Chihiro finds that her parents have been turned into pigs.
A boy named Haku helps her. He tells her that the town belongs to spirits and that humans are not welcome there. To survive, she must get a job at the bathhouse, a huge building where spirits and gods come to bathe. The bathhouse is run by Yubaba, a powerful and greedy witch.
Yubaba gives Chihiro a job, but she takes her name away and calls her Sen instead. The film follows Chihiro as she works hard, makes new friends and tries to find a way to save her parents and go home.
