Synopsis
My Neighbor Totoro is a 1988 fantasy anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli. It runs for about 86 minutes and is an original story. It is set in the countryside of Japan in the 1950s.

Satsuki Kusakabe is ten years old, and her little sister Mei is four. They move with their father, a university professor, to an old house in the country. Their mother is in a hospital nearby while she gets better from an illness. The family hopes that she can come home soon.

The house is old and a little run down, and it seems to be full of small, strange things. The girls find tiny black dust spirits that live in the dark corners. Behind the house, there is a huge camphor tree that seems very special.

One day, while Satsuki is at school, Mei plays alone in the garden. She follows two small, rabbit-like creatures into the woods. There she finds a huge, furry forest spirit sleeping inside the tree. She names him Totoro. Their father tells Mei that she was lucky to meet the keeper of the forest.

Soon, Satsuki also meets Totoro, and the sisters discover more magic around their new home, like a cat that is also a bus. The film follows Satsuki and Mei through their days in the countryside, as they play, explore and wait for their mother to come home.
