Synopsis
Rent-a-Girlfriend is a 2020 romantic comedy anime, and this first season has 12 episodes. It was made by TMS Entertainment and is based on the manga by Reiji Miyajima. It is set in modern Tokyo.
Kazuya Kinoshita is a 20 year old college student. His first girlfriend, Mami, has just broken up with him after only a month. Kazuya feels lonely and hurt. Late one night, he downloads an app that lets people rent a girlfriend for a date.
He rents Chizuru Mizuhara. She is beautiful and kind, and she seems perfect. They have a very nice date. But after it ends, Kazuya feels that her kindness was only part of the job. He gives her a bad rating on the app. The next time he rents her, Chizuru shows her true self. She is blunt, and she is not happy with him at all.
Then things get complicated. Kazuya's grandmother falls ill and goes to the hospital. When she sees Kazuya with Chizuru, she believes Chizuru is his real girlfriend, and she is overjoyed. Chizuru's grandmother is in the same hospital, and she believes the same thing. Kazuya also learns that Chizuru lives right next door and goes to his college.
To keep their grandmothers happy, Kazuya and Chizuru agree to keep pretending to be a couple. The season follows their fake relationship, as it gets harder to hide the truth and harder for Kazuya to hide his real feelings.
