Arata Kasuga is a cheerful high school boy who lives a normal life with his cousin Hijiri. One day, a strange event called a Breakdown Phenomenon hits his town. The sky turns black, and Hijiri disappears. Before she is gone, she leaves Arata a magic book called a grimoire.

Soon a young woman named Lilith Asami appears. She is a mage and a teacher at the Royal Biblia Academy, a hidden school for people who use magic. She tells Arata that he has great magical power, and that the grimoire has chosen him. Because of the danger in his power, the school wants to watch him closely.

Arata agrees to enroll at the academy. His goal is to learn magic fast, so he can find a way to bring Hijiri back. At the school, he meets the Trinity Seven, the seven strongest girl mages in the academy. Each one studies a different type of magic.

Arata is very open about liking girls, and this leads to many silly scenes. The show follows him as he trains, makes friends and faces rivals at the academy.
