Synopsis
5 Centimeters per Second is a 2007 anime drama film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and made by CoMix Wave. It runs for about 63 minutes and is an original story. It is made of three short connected parts that follow the same young man at different times in his life, from the early 1990s to the late 2000s in Japan.
The title comes from the speed at which cherry blossom petals are said to fall, about five centimeters per second.
The first part is called "Cherry Blossom". Takaki Tono is an elementary school student in Tokyo. He becomes very close to Akari Shinohara, a new girl in his class. They both like books and feel like outsiders, and they spend most of their time together.
After elementary school, Akari's family moves to a town far away in Tochigi. The two of them keep in touch by writing letters. Then Takaki learns that his own family will soon move even farther away, to the south of Japan. Before he leaves, he decides to visit Akari one last time. On the day of the trip, heavy snow falls, and his train is delayed again and again.
The second and third parts follow Takaki as a high school student and later as an adult. They also show the people around him and the feelings they cannot say out loud.
The film follows Takaki as he grows up and tries to hold on to a feeling from his childhood while life pulls people apart.
