Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school girl who lives in the small town of Itomori. Her family runs the local shrine, and her father is the town mayor. Mitsuha is tired of life in the country. She wishes she could live in Tokyo instead, maybe even as a boy.
Taki Tachibana is a high school boy who lives in Tokyo. He goes to school, spends time with his friends and works part time at an Italian restaurant.
One morning, Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body, and Taki wakes up in hers. At first, they both think it is just a very strange dream. But it keeps happening on random days. Each time, they must get through a whole day as a stranger, in a place they do not know.
To cope, they start to leave notes and messages on each other's phones. They make rules about what the other person can and cannot do. Taki makes Mitsuha more popular at school, and Mitsuha tries to help Taki with a girl he likes at work.
The film follows two teenagers who have never met, but who slowly start to care about each other.
