Synopsis
Suzume is a 2022 fantasy adventure film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. It was made by CoMix Wave Films and is an original story. It is set in modern Japan, and it travels across the country from Kyushu in the south to Tokyo and beyond.
Suzume Iwato is a 17-year-old high school girl. She lives with her aunt Tamaki in a quiet seaside town. One morning on her way to school, she meets a young man named Souta. He asks her if there are any ruins nearby, because he is looking for a door.
Suzume follows him to an old, empty hot spring resort in the hills. There she finds a single white door standing alone in the ruins. When she opens it, she sees a strange sky full of stars on the other side. She also picks up a small stone statue, and it turns into a white cat that runs away.
Soon Suzume learns that doors like this exist in empty places all over Japan. If they are left open, a huge red force comes through and causes earthquakes. Souta is a Closer, a person whose job is to lock these doors. After the cat puts a spell on Souta, he is trapped inside a small wooden chair with three legs.
Suzume leaves home to help him. Together they chase the cat across Japan and close each door before disaster strikes. The film mixes road trip comedy with a story about loss and memory.
