Synopsis
The Garden of Words is a 2013 anime romance drama film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and made by CoMix Wave Films. It is a short film of about 46 minutes and is an original story. It is set in Tokyo during the rainy season.

Takao Akizuki is a 15 year old high school student. His dream is to become a shoemaker, even though most people around him think it is not a real job. On rainy mornings, he skips his first classes and goes to Shinjuku Gyoen, a large and quiet garden in the middle of the city. There, he sits under a shelter and draws shoes.

One morning, he finds that someone else is already in his spot. She is a young woman named Yukari Yukino. She is drinking beer and eating chocolate for breakfast, even though it is early in the day. She seems to be avoiding her own life, just like he is.

They start to meet in the garden whenever it rains. They talk about small things, and they do not ask each other too many questions. Takao shares his dream with her, and she listens. He decides to make a pair of shoes for her.

As the rainy season goes on, they become important to each other. But they each have things they have not said. The film follows Takao and Yukari through one rainy summer, as they help each other find the courage to move forward.
