Synopsis
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is a 2020 romance drama film made by the studio Bones. It was directed by Kotaro Tamura and is based on the short story by Seiko Tanabe. It is set in modern Osaka, in Japan. It is a quiet, warm story for teens and adults.
Tsuneo Suzukawa is a university student who studies marine biology. His dream is to go to Mexico and see a rare kind of fish in the wild. To save money for the trip, he works part time at a diving shop and takes other jobs too.
One day, Tsuneo sees a wheelchair rolling fast down a hill. He catches it just in time. The young woman in the chair is Kumiko, who cannot walk. She calls herself Josee, after a character in her favorite novel. She lives with her grandmother, who keeps her at home and rarely lets her go outside.
The grandmother offers Tsuneo a paid job as Josee's caretaker. He takes it for the money. At first, Josee is rude and bossy, and she gives him silly orders. But Tsuneo soon learns that she loves to draw, and that she dreams of seeing the real sea.
Tsuneo starts taking Josee out into the city, to places she has only seen in books. The film follows the two of them as they open up to each other and chase their dreams.
