Synopsis
Violet Evergarden is a 2018 drama anime with 13 episodes. It was made by Kyoto Animation and is based on the light novels by Kana Akatsuki. It is set in a fantasy world that looks like Europe in the early 1900s, in the years right after a long war.
Violet Evergarden is a young woman who was raised to be a soldier. She has known nothing but fighting for most of her life. In the war, she lost both of her arms, and she now has metal arms instead. She is very good at following orders, but she does not understand feelings. She speaks in a stiff and formal way.
During the war, Violet served under Major Gilbert Bougainvillea. He was the only person who treated her with kindness. The last thing he said to her was "I love you". Violet does not know what those words mean, and she wants to find out.
After she leaves the hospital, Claudia Hodgins, a friend of Gilbert, gives her a job at the CH Postal Company in the city of Leiden. There, Violet learns about Auto Memory Dolls. These are women who help people write letters and put their true feelings into words.
Violet decides to become one of them. At first she is not good at the job, because she takes every word too literally. The series follows Violet as she meets new clients and slowly learns what it means to love someone.
