Synopsis
Violet Evergarden: the Movie is a 2020 drama film made by Kyoto Animation. It follows the TV series and the side film Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, and it is based on the light novels by Kana Akatsuki. It is set in a European style world a few years after a long war.
The film opens many years later. Daisy is a young woman whose grandmother has just died. At the house, she finds a box of old letters. Her great-grandmother wrote them to her grandmother, one for each birthday. Daisy learns that the letters were written with help from a famous Auto Memory Doll named Violet Evergarden. She starts to wonder who Violet was.
The story then goes back to Violet's own time. Violet was once a child soldier. Now she works at the CH Postal Company, writing letters for people who cannot find the right words. The city is changing fast, and new phone lines may soon replace letters.
Violet is good at her job and many clients ask for her by name. But she still thinks every day about Major Gilbert, the officer who raised her in the army. He was lost in the war, and she still writes letters to him that she can never send. Then a sick boy named Yuris asks her to help him write letters to his family.
The film is a quiet drama about love, loss and the words people leave behind.
