Synopsis
Asobi Asobase - workshop of fun - is a 2018 comedy anime with 12 episodes. It was made by the studio Lerche and is based on the manga by Rin Suzukawa. It is set at a girls' school in modern Japan. The art looks cute at first, but the show is famous for its wild faces and crazy jokes.
The story follows three middle school girls. Hanako Honda comes from a rich family, but she is not popular, and she badly wants to be. Olivia is a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes who looks foreign. In truth, she grew up in Japan and cannot speak English at all. Kasumi Nomura is a quiet girl with glasses who is very bad at games and hates English class.
At the start, Olivia and Kasumi are playing a simple game in the schoolyard, and Hanako asks to join. The three girls quickly become friends. Kasumi asks Olivia to teach her English, and Olivia has to pretend she knows it. Soon, the girls decide to start a new club. They call it the Pastimers Club, and its goal is to play all kinds of games.
The games are often childish and simple, like staring contests or drawing games. But the girls take them very seriously, and every game quickly gets out of hand. They argue, cheat and make terrible faces.
The show is a loud and silly comedy about friendship and the strange things kids do to have fun.
