Synopsis
Black Butler is a 2008 dark fantasy mystery anime, and this first season has 24 episodes. It was made by A-1 Pictures and is based on the manga by Yana Toboso. The first half follows the manga, and the second half tells its own original story. It is set in Victorian England in the late 1800s.
Ciel Phantomhive is a 12 year old boy and the head of the rich and noble Phantomhive family. He runs a large toy and candy company. In secret, he also works for Queen Victoria as her "watchdog". He looks into dark crimes in the London underworld that the police cannot handle.
Ciel is always by the side of his butler, Sebastian Michaelis. Sebastian is polite and perfect at every task, from cooking and cleaning to fighting. When people ask how he can do so much, he says, "I am simply one hell of a butler."
This is closer to the truth than they know. Sebastian is a demon. Years ago, something terrible happened to Ciel and his family, and Ciel made a deal with him. Sebastian will serve and protect Ciel until he gets his revenge on the people who hurt him. In return, Sebastian will take Ciel's soul when it is over. The sign of their deal is a mark in Ciel's right eye, which he covers with an eyepatch.
The series follows Ciel and Sebastian as they solve mysteries for the Queen and search for the people behind Ciel's past.
