Synopsis
The Case Study of Vanitas is a 2021 dark fantasy anime. This first part has 12 episodes and was made by the studio Bones. It is based on the manga by Jun Mochizuki. It is set in a steampunk version of Paris in the 1800s, where vampires live in secret beside humans.
Noe Archiviste is a young vampire from the countryside. His teacher has sent him to Paris to find the Book of Vanitas. It is said to be a cursed book made by a vampire who was hated by others of his kind. Noe is kind and curious, and he knows little about the city.
On an airship on the way to Paris, Noe sees a vampire suddenly go wild and attack people. Then a young man steps in and calms the vampire down. The young man calls himself Vanitas and says he is a vampire doctor. He is a human, but he owns the Book of Vanitas.
Vanitas explains that some vampires suffer from a curse called malnomen. It corrupts their true name, and it makes them lose control and attack others. Vanitas uses the book to cure them. He is clever and full of himself, and he often says strange or rude things. Still, he asks Noe to help him.
The two of them start to work together to save cursed vampires across Paris. At the same time, they face powerful vampires and dangerous hunters. The series follows Noe and Vanitas as they search for the cause of the curse.
