Synopsis
Great Pretender is a 2020 crime comedy anime with 23 episodes. It is an original story made by Wit Studio and written by Ryota Kosawa. It is set in many cities around the world, including Tokyo, Los Angeles, Singapore and London.
Makoto Edamura is a young con man in Tokyo who calls himself Japan's greatest swindler. In truth, he runs small scams to get by, and he is not as good as he thinks. He also has a sad past that pushed him into this life.
One day, Makoto sees a well-dressed French tourist named Laurent Thierry. He thinks Laurent will be an easy target. Makoto and his partner try to trick him, but things quickly turn around. Laurent is actually a much bigger con artist. He works with a skilled team that cheats rich and dangerous criminals out of huge amounts of money.
Before Makoto knows what is happening, he is in Los Angeles. Laurent has pulled him into a new plan. Their target is Eddie Cassano, a powerful Hollywood film producer who secretly sells drugs. Makoto meets the rest of Laurent's team, including Abigail, a tough and quiet young woman, and Cynthia, a smart and elegant older woman.
Makoto does not want to be part of the plan, but he has no choice. The series follows Makoto as he works with Laurent's crew on big and clever cons around the world, and as he starts to question what kind of person he really is.
