Synopsis
Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light is a 2011 anime film that runs for about 45 minutes. It was made by the studio Brain's Base and directed by Takahiro Omori. It is based on a one-shot manga by Yuki Midorikawa, the creator of Natsume's Book of Friends. It is a quiet fantasy romance and a coming of age story.
Hotaru Takegawa is a six-year-old girl who spends her summer with her grandfather in the countryside. One day she gets lost in a forest near his home. The forest is said to belong to a mountain god, and spirits called yokai live there. Hotaru starts to cry because she cannot find her way out.
A young man in a fox mask finds her. His name is Gin, and he lives in the forest. He is not human, and he is not a normal yokai either. He agrees to lead Hotaru out of the forest. But there is one rule. If a human touches him, he will disappear forever.
Hotaru comes back to see Gin the next day, and then every summer after that. The two spend long days together in the forest, walking, talking and playing. They can never hold hands or even brush against each other.
Each year, Hotaru gets a little older, while Gin stays the same. The film follows their friendship over many summers, and the quiet feelings that grow between them.
