Synopsis
Land of the Lustrous is a 2017 fantasy anime with 12 episodes. It was made by the studio Orange and is based on the manga by Haruko Ichikawa. It uses 3D computer animation that makes its characters shine like real jewels. It is set on Earth in the far future, when only one small stretch of land is left.

This land is home to 28 living gems. They look like humans, but their bodies are made of precious stones, and they do not age. They can break into pieces, but they can be put back together. They are led by Kongo, a calm monk who acts like their teacher.

The gems are often attacked by Lunarians, strange beings who come down from the moon on clouds. The Lunarians want to capture the gems and break them into pieces to use as jewelry.

Phosphophyllite, called Phos, is the youngest gem, at about 300 years old. Phos is very fragile and clumsy, and Phos is not good at fighting or any other job. Kongo gives Phos the task of writing an encyclopedia about the natural world. Phos does not like this job, because it feels useless.

While looking for material, Phos meets Cinnabar, a lonely gem who can release poison. Cinnabar is forced to patrol alone at night so the poison does not hurt others. Phos decides to find Cinnabar a better job. The show is a quiet and thoughtful story about purpose, change and loneliness.
