Synopsis
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is the second season of the dark fantasy adventure anime Made in Abyss. It aired in 2022 with 12 episodes and was made by Kinema Citrus. It is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi. It has very disturbing scenes of violence and body horror, so it is only for adult viewers.
The story is set around the Abyss, a giant hole in the earth full of strange creatures and ancient relics. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it gets. Coming back up causes a curse that grows worse with each layer.
Riko is a young girl who wants to reach the bottom of the Abyss to find her mother. She travels with Reg, a robot boy with no memory, and Nanachi, a kind and furry creature who was once human. After their time on the Fifth Layer, the three now go down to the Sixth Layer. It is called the Capital of the Unreturned, because anyone who goes up from there can never return to normal life.
In the Sixth Layer, they find a strange village full of creatures unlike anything they have seen. The village has its own strange rules.
At the same time, the season tells another story from about 150 years in the past. A group of explorers called the Ganja, with a girl named Vueko, travel deep into the Abyss in search of a golden city. The two stories slowly come together.
