Synopsis
Made in Abyss is a 2017 dark fantasy adventure anime, and this first season has 13 episodes. It was made by the studio Kinema Citrus and is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi. The story is set in the town of Orth, which is built around the edge of a giant hole in the ground called the Abyss.
Nobody knows how deep the Abyss goes. It is full of strange creatures and ancient relics that are worth a lot of money. Brave explorers called Cave Raiders go down into it to find these treasures. But the Abyss has a curse. The deeper you go, the worse it hurts to come back up.
Riko is a 12 year old orphan who is training to be a Cave Raider. Her mother, Lyza, is a famous Cave Raider who went down into the Abyss years ago and never came back.
One day, while searching the first layer of the Abyss, Riko is attacked by a monster. A strange boy saves her. He looks human, but his body is part machine, and he has no memory of who he is. Riko names him Reg and hides him in the orphanage.
Soon, a message from Lyza comes up from the deep part of the Abyss. It says, "I'll be waiting for you at the bottom". Riko decides to go down and find her mother, and Reg goes with her. The series follows them as they descend into the Abyss, where beauty and danger grow with every layer.
