Synopsis
The Apothecary Diaries is a 2023 historical mystery drama anime, and this first season has 24 episodes. It was made by OLM and TOHO animation STUDIO and is based on the light novels by Natsu Hyuuga. It is set in the imperial palace of a fantasy country that looks like ancient China.
Maomao is a 17 year old girl who grew up in the city's red-light district. There she worked as an apothecary, making medicine with her adoptive father. She knows a lot about herbs and poisons, and she loves to test them, sometimes even on herself.
One day, Maomao is kidnapped and sold to the imperial palace. She now works as a low level servant in the inner palace, where the emperor's many wives live. Maomao plans to keep her head down, work quietly and go home when her contract ends.
But then she hears that the emperor's babies keep falling sick, and one of them has died. People say it is a curse. Maomao does not believe in curses. She looks closer and finds the real cause. She leaves a secret warning note, hoping nobody will know it came from her.
Her warning is noticed by Jinshi, a very handsome and powerful official in the palace. He tracks her down and puts her to work as a food taster for one of the emperor's favorite consorts. The series follows Maomao as she solves mysteries around the palace with her medical skills, while Jinshi keeps a close eye on her.
