Synopsis
Yona of the Dawn is a 2014 fantasy adventure anime with 24 episodes. It was made by Studio Pierrot and is based on the manga by Mizuho Kusanagi. It is set in the Kingdom of Kouka, a land inspired by ancient Korea and China.
Princess Yona is the only child of King Il, a kind and gentle ruler who hates violence. She has spent her whole life inside the royal castle, with fine clothes and servants. She knows almost nothing about the world outside or the hard lives of her people. Her main worries are her red hair, which she does not like, and her feelings for her cousin, Su-won, whom she has loved since they were children.
Yona's closest friends are Su-won and Hak, her bodyguard. Hak is a skilled warrior known as the Thunder Beast. He teases Yona, but he is completely loyal to her.
On the night of Yona's sixteenth birthday, a shocking event changes everything. She loses her home and her family in a single night, and she must run away from the castle with Hak. For the first time, she has to live in the real world, where danger is everywhere.
Yona learns about an old legend of the Crimson Dragon King and four warriors with dragon powers who protected him. A priest tells her that she must find these four dragons. The series follows Yona as she grows from a sheltered princess into a strong young woman, and as she searches for the dragons and learns about her kingdom.
