Synopsis
WataMote: No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular! is a 2013 comedy anime with 12 episodes. It was made by Silver Link and is based on the manga by Nico Tanigawa. It is set at a normal high school in modern Japan. The show has some crude jokes, so it is best for older teens and adults.
Tomoko Kuroki has just started high school. She has played many dating games, and she believes she knows everything about boys and romance. She is sure she will be one of the most popular girls in school.
But reality is very different. Tomoko is extremely shy and awkward. She can barely speak to her classmates, and when she does, her voice comes out wrong. Most people do not even notice her. After one month of school, she has not made a single friend.
Tomoko refuses to give up. She comes up with many plans to become popular. She practices smiling, tries new looks and copies things she has seen in games and anime. Almost every plan fails in an embarrassing way. At home, she takes out her frustration on her younger brother, Tomoki, who just wants to be left alone. She also meets her old middle school friend Yu, who has changed a lot.
The show is a dark comedy about social anxiety. It is often funny, but it can also be painful to watch because Tomoko's struggles feel very real.
