Synopsis
Akira is a 1988 science fiction anime film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and made by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. It runs for about two hours and is based on Otomo's own manga. It is set in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019. It has strong violence and is made for older viewers.

In 1988, a huge explosion destroyed Tokyo and started a world war. Thirty one years later, a new city called Neo-Tokyo has been built in its place. The city is crowded and full of crime, protests and angry street gangs. The government and the army are struggling to keep control.

Shotaro Kaneda is a cocky teenage boy who leads a motorcycle gang called the Capsules. His best friend since childhood is Tetsuo Shima, a smaller member of the gang who often feels like he lives in Kaneda's shadow.

One night, during a fight with a rival gang, Tetsuo crashes his bike into a strange child with the face of an old man. The child has escaped from a secret government lab. Soon after, the army arrives and takes both the child and the hurt Tetsuo away. Kaneda wants to get his friend back.

At the lab, scientists find that Tetsuo has strong psychic powers. They compare him to Akira, a mysterious name linked to the disaster of 1988. As Tetsuo's powers grow, he begins to lose control. The film follows Kaneda as he tries to find Tetsuo, joins a group of rebels and faces a threat to the whole city.
