Yuzuru Otonashi wakes up at night in the middle of a school ground. He cannot remember anything about his life, not even his first name. A girl with a rifle tells him that he is dead. She says this school is a place between life and what comes next.

The girl is Yuri Nakamura. She leads the Afterlife Battlefront, a group of students who are angry about the unfair lives they lived. They refuse to accept their fate, so they fight against God. In this world, the students cannot die again, even if they are shot or hurt.

Their enemy is a quiet girl they call Angel. She is the student council president, and she has strange powers. The Battlefront believes that if they act like good students and follow the rules, they will vanish from this world. So they break the rules on purpose and fight Angel whenever they can.

Otonashi joins the group, even though he is not sure who is right. He wants to find out who he was and why he is here. The series follows Otonashi, Yuri and the other members as they plan missions and learn more about this world and each other.
