Gintama

Gintama is a 2006 comedy action anime. The first series has 201 episodes and was made by the studio Sunrise. It is based on the manga by Hideaki Sorachi. It is set in a strange version of Edo, the old name for Tokyo, at a time when aliens have taken over Japan.

Years ago, aliens called the Amanto landed in Japan. The samurai fought back, but they lost. Now the government works for the aliens, and samurai are not allowed to carry swords. Edo is full of alien technology, spaceships and strange creatures, but people still wear old style clothes.

Gintoki Sakata is a former samurai with silver hair and a lazy attitude. He loves sweets, reads boy's comics and rarely pays his rent. He still carries a wooden sword. Gintoki runs a small business called Yorozuya, which means "we do anything". He takes any job people will pay him for.

In the first episodes, Gintoki helps Shinpachi Shimura, a shy teenage boy who works at a family food stand, and his older sister. Shinpachi decides to work for Gintoki to learn the way of the samurai. Soon after, they meet Kagura, a teenage alien girl with huge strength and a big appetite. She also joins them, along with a giant dog named Sadaharu.

The show mixes silly jokes, parodies of other anime and serious sword fights. It follows the Yorozuya team as they take on odd jobs and get into trouble all over Edo.
