Synopsis
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a 2006 science fiction romance film directed by Mamoru Hosoda. It was made by Madhouse and is a loose follow-up to the 1967 novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. It is set in modern Tokyo during a hot summer. It is a gentle story about youth, friendship and choices.
Makoto Konno is a cheerful high school girl who is often late and a little clumsy. After school, she likes to play catch with her two best friends. Chiaki Mamiya is a new student who is relaxed and easy to talk to. Kosuke Tsuda is kind and hard-working, and he wants to become a doctor.
One day, Makoto falls in the school science lab and lands on a strange object. Later that day, the brakes on her bicycle fail, and she speeds toward a train crossing. Just before the crash, she suddenly finds herself back in time, a few moments earlier.
Makoto visits her aunt Kazuko, who works at a museum. Her aunt calmly tells her that she can now leap through time. Girls her age sometimes can, she says.
Makoto starts to use her new power for small things. She goes back to redo a bad test, to eat her favorite dinner again and to sing at karaoke for hours. She also jumps back to avoid moments that make her feel awkward. But soon she learns that each leap can change things for the people around her.
