Synopsis
Kakegurui is a 2017 psychological drama anime, and this first season has 12 episodes. It was made by the studio MAPPA and is based on the manga by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura. It is set at Hyakkaou Private Academy, a rich private school in Japan for the children of powerful families.
At Hyakkaou, grades and sports do not matter much. What matters is gambling. The students play games of chance against each other for large sums of money, and the winners rise to the top of the school. The student council runs the whole system.
Students who lose too much and fall into debt become "pets". They have to wear name tags and do whatever the other students say. Ryota Suzui is one of these pets. He is a normal boy who lost a game and now lives at the bottom of the school.
One day, a new transfer student joins his class. Her name is Yumeko Jabami. She is polite and friendly, and at first she seems very easy to beat. Mary Saotome, a top gambler in the class, challenges her to a game.
But Yumeko is not like the other students. She does not gamble to win money or power. She loves gambling for the risk itself, and the bigger the risk, the happier she gets. Her strange style soon shakes up the school. The series follows Yumeko as she takes on the best gamblers at Hyakkaou and heads toward the student council.
