It is based on the light novel series by Tappei Nagatsuki. The story is set in the Kingdom of Lugunica, a fantasy country that is choosing its next ruler.
Subaru Natsuki is a young man who was pulled into this world from Japan. He has a strange power. When he dies, he goes back to an earlier point in time and can try again. No one else remembers, and he cannot tell anyone about it.
This season starts one year after the events of Season 2. Subaru supports Emilia, a half-elf girl who is one of the candidates to become queen. Emilia's group now has a strong team, and they are working hard to win the royal election.
One day, Emilia gets a letter from Anastasia Hoshin, another royal candidate. She invites them to Priestella, a beautiful city built on water and known as the Water Gate City. Anastasia says a magic crystal they need might be there. Subaru, Emilia, Beatrice, Garfiel and Otto travel to the city.
In Priestella, they meet other royal candidates and their knights, and they enjoy the city's songs and canals. Subaru also meets Liliana, a lively young singer. But danger is closer than anyone thinks. The season has strong violence and dark scenes.
